And now, a new post! With pictures!

It was sad to say goodbye to Bran, Mike & Audrey yesterday, but we had a great visit this past week.  With school still on a break I took the week off work to have fun in the city.

Audrey is an early riser but her sweet little voice and footie pajamas were difficult to resist.

Mike has a few clients in the area so we headed up to Madison, WI for the day where we wandered around the capital in the rain.

We went to the park where Audrey plucked dandelions.

While Mike visited a client in Milwaukee, Bran, Audrey & I went to the Shedd Aquarium where we lucked out and were given free passes to the Dolphin, Beluga Whale & Penguin exhibit. Audrey was fascinated and in the Polar Play Zone, got to dress up as a penguin, complete with hatching baby penguin egg.

While Mike & Bran went to the Cubs v. Dodgers game, I introduced Audrey to the mecca for little girls: American Girl Place. Naturally we couldn’t leave without a new baby for Audrey, so she selected baby Meg to join the Morris family. After we wandered around the rows of doll clothes, books and doll furniture, we had afternoon tea at the Cafe, complete with tea sandwiches, scones and lemonade. Meg, Audrey & I enjoyed every bite.

The decor was absolutely adorable, complete with pink on just about every available surface.

Mike’s nephew Joe is serving at a local Naval base and joined us on his day off. We tried to see Obama’s house in Hyde Park but the barricades at either end of the block prevented us from even seeing the house, even though Obama was not home. The signs on the barricades stated that anyone entering the area was subject to search but despite our willingness to be searched, the officers refused to let us any closer.  Boo!

As a thank you to me for allowing them to share my 409 sqft apartment, I was treated to one of the best meals of my life at Perennial, voted one of Travel & Leisure magazine’s Top 50 New Restaurants in the U.S. And it absolutely lived up to it’s title! The cocktails were amazing, the starters were great (soy/orange chicken lollipops, tender mushroom gnocchi, a selection of cow’s milk cheese), the entrees excellent (the most tender filet with shallot compote and gruyere potato latke), and the desserts (passion fruit cream with berry gele and vanilla bean ice cream, cheesecake foam with graham cracker ice cream, and hazelnut nutella crisp with hazelnut ice cream), oh my goodness! If you are ever in Chicago and in the mood to splurge on an unforgettable meal, Perennial should be on the top of your list.  (And now after that meal I owe them. :-) )
