The fate of Lars

Many friends who have followed my recent adoption of my cat, Lars, and his subsequent health issues (as posted about on FB), have asked for an update on his condition.  First of all, thank you for asking!  To be honest, I have felt a little silly to have taken things as hard as I have, but those who have had pets reassured me that this is just how they are: in a short time they burrow their way into your heart and it’s soon hard to imagine life without them.  And that was just the way it was with Lars.  His sweet temperament and cuddly nature instantly endeared him to me so I would want to race home from a long day at work to see him. I loved how he would sit his furry body down on my head in the middle of the night or ‘meow’ politely when I made eye contact with him early in the morning as if it ask, “Are you ready to get up? No pressure.”

For those that hadn’t seen FB updates, in short, Lars’ appetite was poor when I brought him and he had lost several pounds while in the shelter for two months.  When it became apparent within the first few days of having him home that his appetite was not improving and in fact declined, I consulted both the shelter vet as well as my own private vet.  Monitoring and medication was the first response, followed eventually by x-rays and blood tests.  The private vet’s blood tests revealed that Lars has FIV, the cat equivalent of HIV, which he had likely contracted from some other infected mean cat who bit him several years ago.  (Can you tell I’m a little angry at the cat who infected Lars? I’ll process this in therapy. ;=P) Like humans with HIV, cats can live symptom-free for many years until something depresses their immune system.  Eventually, they don’t have the strength to battle whatever illness they contract (in Lars’ case, the flu), and it leads to a health decline.  Cats like Lars may bounce back for periods of time (a week, a month, they don’t know), only to decline further the next time, and the next time, and the next time, eventually wasting away.

For a little over a week Lars has been at the shelter’s hospital rehab unit where they were running a second, more accurate test and also monitoring his eating more closely than I can now that school, practicum/training and work are in full-force.  Yesterday I received a call from the shelter vet who confirmed that Lars does have FIV and that while he is comfortable and doing relatively-OK at the moment (he had resumed eating a little more), the prognosis was not good and the recommendation was for me to surrender Lars back to the shelter who would take on his care from now on. This is what I have decided to do.

We had two weeks together and I loved every minute with this sweet guy. Here are just a handful of photos taken with my cell phone camera in the time we had.

Eventually I will find another furry friend to invade my home but until then, Lars will remain, in my mind, the best cat ever.

30 - 9:30 pm Sarah - sad... sorry friend...

30 - 9:41 pm hannah - awww kelly. i loved seeing your cat tweets! you were probably a great cat mom and made his last days really great.

30 - 10:22 pm Lauren - I'm so sorry Kelly. He sounds like the sweetest little guy. I'm sad that his time with you was so short and that he is so sick! I hope you will open your heart to another kitty soon. I can't imagine life with out a pet anymore... they add so much to our lives! L

30 - 10:27 pm Ryan - I always enjoyed reading your updates about the excitement and fulfillment that Lars brought to your life. It sounds like you are both lucky to have found each other! Thanks for sharing your story.

30 - 10:50 pm Nancy G - I'm so sorry, Kelly.

30 - 7:20 pm Molly W. - I'm so sorry, Kel. I too hope you, in time, get another animal to love, you've got lots to give. xo

30 - 7:12 pm Phoebe - That is the saddest story ever! I am so sorry.

Like any proud new mommy

A few of the new guy in my life…He continues to be a total lovey and so far we’re very happy together. (Even at 4am when he crawled up beside my head and laid down.)

And for now, I’m calling him Lars. We’ll see if it sticks.

31 - 11:13 am Denise - I don't care if other people in your life (ahem, B and Molly) disapprove of your new love--I adore him and want to be honorary auntie. Those eyes! Those nose freckles!

31 - 3:39 pm Kelly - I hereby dub thee, Auntie D!

31 - 9:14 pm Lauren - He's a beauty!! I would also like to apply for auntie status... is there some sort of application I need to fill out? Shall I forward references?

31 - 9:33 am Kelly - Your reputation as a pet lover precedes you, L, so you are hereby dubbed Auntie La!

31 - 10:41 pm Molly W. - Congratulations? :) hehe...I'm happy you have him to love and I think Lars suits him just perfectly! xo

31 - 11:48 pm Sarah - I really don't like cats... HOWEVER... He looks like a doll!!! Enjoy him!

31 - 11:28 am Brandi Myers - LOVE LARS! He is beautiful! Tabby kitties are so smart and sweet! Congratulations!

Welcome…no-name!

After months of thinking, asking and soliciting advice on everything from the cost of cat ownership to the best place to find one, I decided to visit a shelter after practicum this afternoon. Just to look, mind you.

I looked.

And came home with this guy.

Doesn’t he have the most beautiful eyes? He’s a sweet guy who hasn’t made a peep since we came home but he seems to be acclimating well and appears comfortable exploring his new surroundings and also resting on my lap, purring as I scratch his ears.  While I considered a kitten, I decided to go with an older cat so that I had a better idea of his personality (read: not too noisy or aggressive).  Plus, I imagine the older ones can be harder to adopt, so 4-year old No-Name felt like a good choice.

The shelter named him Bam-Bam but alas, that name is not going to stay so I’m testing out names over the next few days to see what fits best.  Currently under consideration: Sven, Lars, Ole. (Yes, the ‘Scandinavian’ name theme is intentional. :-) ) I am taking recommendations, though, so if this little face speaks to you with something brilliant & clever, do tell!

31 - 11:25 am Denise - Hans Kitty Andersen!

31 - 11:26 am Denise - By the way, Matt is going to be so jealous.

31 - 12:10 pm Phoebe - I love that you finally got a cat after years of wanting one! It gives me hope... Laughing at Hans Kitty Anderson-Funny!

Bathtime

My nephew Kellen L.O.V.E.S. his bath.

(Still working my way through miscellaneous photos from May, when Kellen was a mere 3 weeks old.)

31 - 10:23 pm Brandi - Those are AWESOME. Can't believe he is already sooo much bigger. Makes me sad--how quickly life passes!

Untitled

When I came across this image I wondered what my niece was thinking as she cozied up to her baby brother.

31 - 9:25 pm Tasha Schalk - I LOVE this, Kelly! What a fabulous photojournalistic shot... wonderfully expressive eyes.

31 - 10:44 pm Brandi - As I will post on my own blog, this could be my favorite picture of all time.

31 - 7:13 pm Molly W. - surely she was thinking "i can't wait for B to come over so we can run around nakey in my backyard." :)

31 - 7:46 pm Sarah - you would NEVER catch my boys snuggling like this... what a treasure...

31 - 12:56 pm Denise - Oh my. Simply couldn't love this shot any more.

Thoughts on a Monday:

  • As of last Thursday I completed my second full year of graduate school.  Two more years of school + one year of internship and then I will insist that every piece of mail you send me be addressed to Dr. Kelly.
  • I didn’t enjoy receiving my electric bill for the past month.  It more than doubled with frequent use of the A/C.  After having it on for 4 days straight, I’m forcing myself to endure 48 hours without it.  (Not sure that tiny window unit can take such consistent use.)
  • After helping two friends move this past weekend, I’ve found the silver lining to deciding to stay in my (oh-so tiny) place.
  • I could really use some of my home-design-expert friends to help me rearrange/redecorate my place to make it more livable for these next two years. In the words of my sister, it’s time to “Scandinavianize”.
  • In an effort to make my place less cluttered, I cleaned out my clothes closet & dresser and filled 3 black trash bags with clothes and a 4th bag filled with shoes to donate to Salvation Army.  I still don’t understand how I managed to do that as my closet & dresser are still relatively full.
  • In other news, I’m afraid to open — and purge — my living room closet.
  • Blogging is both a joy and a curse.  Lately it’s been more of a curse and an obligation I have little time for. I do miss it though.
  • Along a similar vein, I miss taking photos just for me and not for someone else.  As much as I love capturing weddings, families, couples, etc, I find that I have diminished desire to lug my camera around for my own personal enjoyment.  I can only be a Sherpa so many days of the week. I think I need a personal photo project. Any suggestions?
  • I’m planning ahead for the holidays and realized I will likely be able to spend a full 3 weeks in SoCal for Christmas & New Years. Hurray for a visit longer than a weekend!
  • How are things with you?

From my May visit to Portland…

31 - 11:37 am Molly W. - I miss these blog posts. :)Can't wait until you are Dr. Shaw!! and I'm kinda glad you aren't moving...its SO much dang work!

31 - 4:04 pm Rama - Miss you, Dr. Kelly (I'm going to start calling you that early because I think you already have the skill set you need). Already hoping we'll get to see you at Christmas time. Love you.

31 - 6:32 pm Katie B - What if you did a project of photographing tiny things in honor of your oh-so tiny apartment. Then you could make a photo collage out of tiny pictures (in actual size and subject matter) to decorate your place with. Look at that, I just solved a couple of your problems. You're welcome!

31 - 10:43 pm Brandi - Good on you for cleaning out! Simplicity is so wonderful...but so fleeting and so hard to stick to! In the spirit of less is more and of returning to the simple joy of your original love of photography, what about using a good old crappy point and shoot (then you won't have to lug your big guy around) and capture little daily things that you wish you could paint?

Birthday 2010

My 33rd birthday weekend was great.  Nothing exciting, but a wonderful weekend nonetheless capped off with a casual BBQ with a small group of friends at Meg & Chris’.

Thank you, friends. And thanks to all of my long-distance friends & family who called, texted & emailed! Your love was felt.

31 - 2:15 pm Sarah - happy bday kels!

31 - 11:55 pm Molly W. - I'm just now seeing this, I know..I'm lame. :) I'm glad I got to talk to you on your bday as brief as it was. I heart you and your birthday. :) xo

31 - 10:30 am Brandi - Glad you had a wonderful day, Kell. Sorry we couldn't be there to celebrate with you! In Him, Grandad. Oops, I mean: Brandi

Meet KHM

The excuses for my absence this month include a rainy 10 days in Portland meeting this little guy who is even more adorable in person. LOVE HIM. So does his big sister who can’t walk by him without stopping to kiss his head. So sweet.

31 - 10:07 pm Molly W. - He is a sweet pea that's fo sho!!

30 - 9:37 am Lauren - He is SO cute! And this is such a sweet photo of him and his big sis. L

30 - 6:41 pm Brandi Morris - My sweet babies! Awesome shot. Once again, Kell, you are a lifesaver! We miss you already...

Proof of Life

I’ve been asked to provide proof of life.  Here are a couple shots from Humboldt Park while out photographing a couple last weekend.

While in school, every January-March is exceptionally stressful & busy due to the annual search for a new practicum training position that will begin in summer/fall.  The many rules & regulations, processes and deadlines make this time a bit crazy.  Fortunately, it should all end on Monday, Match Day.  Assuming at least one site that I interviewed at agrees that I am the best match for them, the process will be over.  Just in time for the last few crazy weeks of the semester.

If you’re ever in doubt that I’m alive, here’s one good place to check.

31 - 10:08 pm Molly W. - Pretty proof. :)

Oh, my.

Doesn’t this look absolutely delicious? Cranberry sauce with almond cake. Oh, my.

Recipes from Smitten Kitchen HERE.

31 - 12:22 am Molly W. - I'm definitely intrigued....
